Sprinkler systems are the most intrusive of the fire protection systems. Built into the structure of the building and usually maintained under pressure, heat from a fire will trigger a head and spray water into the space, the flow of water triggers an alarm (independent of other systems). As the fire spreads, the number of heads activated spread requiring more water, in many buildings this is supplied by fire pumps that start automatically, these are usually connected to a large firewater tank to avoid issues with overdrawing from the water mains. Some systems have dry mains with other alarms triggering the pump start. This complex system has to be inspected and maintained on a regular basis to ensure all the components work as soon as needed.
Australian Standard 1851 requires each system to be inspected and tested at monthly, six-monthly, yearly, five-year, ten-year, twenty-five year and thirty year intervals; with more rigorous tests being applied during the longer interval inspections.

As with all ESM systems the records of the tests and inspections form part of the annual AESMR report that every owner of a building in a designated class is required to complete.
