Fire hydrants and hose reels are fire protection tools designed to provide water for firefighting. Hydrants are primarily used by trained firefighters for larger-scale fire suppression, while hose reels are designed for initial fire attack by building occupants. Hydrants are connected to a municipal water supply and are strategically located throughout buildings and outdoor areas. Firefighters connect their hoses to the hydrant to deliver water to the fire and can boost the supply by connecting a pump unit to the booster point.
Fire hydrants and hose reels must be installed according to Australian Standard AS2441 to ensure effective fire protection and compliance with the National Construction Code (NCC)

Hose reels require a similar inspection and testing regime including unwinding the hoses and checking for defects.
These inspection and test records form part of the annual AESMR report that every owner of a building in a designated class is required to complete.
