There are different types of portable fire extinguisher suitable for different types of fire, each needing correct signage, routine inspections, and replacement at the extinguishers either when defects are identified, or at the date specified by the manufacturer.
The type and location of fire extinguishers required in buildings are defined in Australian Standard 2444. Australian Standard 1851 requires each fire extinguisher to be services every 6 months 12 months and 5 years.
The 6 month check requires the technician to ensure the extinguisher is accessible, the anti-tamper device is intact, the operating instructions are legible, the service tag is attached, there is no dirt, damage or corrosion, and the extinguisher is full. There are 21 items in the complete checklist.
The annual service and 5 year servicing expand on this basic assessment and include both discharge and full pressure tests. Full-service records are required to be kept detailing all tests and inspections, these records form part of the annual AESMR report that every owner of a building in a designated class is required to complete.
